Standard Test Methods For PH Of Soils

Scope:

 These test methods cover the measurement of the pH of soils that will pass the 2.00 mm (No. 10) sieve. Such measurements are used in the agricultural, environmental, geotechnical, and natural resources fields. This measurement determines the degree of acidity or alkalinity in soil materials suspended in water and a 0.01 M calcium chloride solution. Measurements in both liquids are necessary to fully define the soil’s pH. This variable is useful in determining the solubility of soil minerals and the mobility of ions in the soil and assessing the viability of the soil-plant environment.

Standard Test Methods for pH of Water

Scope:

The pH of water is a critical parameter affecting the solubility of trace minerals, the ability of the water to form scale or to cause metallic corrosion, and the suitability of the water to sustain living organisms. It is a defined scale, based on a system of buffer solutions 2 with assigned values. In pure water at 25°C, pH 7.0 is the neutral point, but this varies with temperature and the ionic strength of the sample. Pure water in equilibrium with air has a pH of about 5.5, and most natural uncontaminated waters range between pH 6 and pH 9. These test methods cover the determination of pH by electrometric measurement using the glass electrode as the sensor.

Standard Method of Test for Determining pH of Soil for Use in Corrosion Testing

Scope:

This test method describes procedures and apparatus for determining a pH value for corrosion testing by use of a pH meter.

The principal use of the test is to supplement soil-resistivity measurements and thereby identify conditions under which the corrosion of metals in the soil may be sharply accentuated. This standard is divided into two parts. The first part involves obtaining and preparing the sample to size for testing. The second part describes the test method for determining the pH of soil.

pH Value in Water by Potentiometry Using a Standard Hydrogen Electrode

Scope:

This method allows for determination of water pH.

Measurement of pH is one of the most important and frequently used tests in water chemistry. Practically every phase of water supply and wastewater treatment (e.g., acid–base neutralization, water softening, precipitation, coagulation, disinfection, and corrosion control) is pH-dependent. pH is used in alkalinity and carbon dioxide measurements and many other acid–base equilibria. At a given temperature the intensity of the acidic or basic character of a solution is indicated by pH or hydrogen ion activity.

pH, Continuous Monitoring (Electrometric)

Scope:

This method is applicable to the continuous pH measurement of drinking, surface, and saline waters, domestic and industrial waste waters. The pH of a sample is determined electrometrically using a glass electrode with a reference electrode or a single combination electrode.

Standard Test Method for Measuring pH of Soil for Use in Corrosion Testing

Scope:

Information on pH of soil is used as an aid in evaluating the corrosivity of a soil environment. Some metals are more sensitive to the pH of their environment than others, and information on the stability of a metal as a function of pH and potential is available in the literature.

This test method covers a procedure for determining the pH of a soil in corrosion testing. The principle use of the test is to supplement soil resistivity measurements and thereby identify conditions under which the corrosion of metals in soil may be accentuated (see G57 – 78 (2012)).

The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

SOIL AND WASTE pH

Scope:

This method is an electrometric procedure for measuring pH in soils and waste samples. Wastes may be solids, sludges, or non-aqueous liquids. If water is present, it must constitute less than 20% of the total volume of the sample.  The sample is mixed with reagent water, and the pH of the resulting aqueous solution is measured.

pH PAPER METHOD

Scope:

Method 9041 is not applicable to wastes that contain components that may mask or alter the pH paper color change. pH paper is not considered to be as accurate a form of pH measurement as pH meters. For this reason, pH measurements taken with Method 9041 cannot be used to define a waste as corrosive or noncorrosive (see RCRA regulations 40 CFR §261.22(a)(1).

The approximate pH of the waste is determined with wide-range pH paper. Then a more accurate pH determination is made using “narrow-range” pH
paper whose accuracy has been determined (1) using a series of buffers or (2) by comparison with a calibrated pH meter.
